I was the stereotypical church girl. At an early age I prayed and asked Jesus to come into my life, but mostly motivated by my fear of death. I was taught about heaven and hell and I didn’t want to go to the latter. I proceeded to follow “all” the rules and was quick to point out those who didn’t, just ask my grade school friends. That was what being a Christian was about, or so I thought.
My senior year of high school, circumstances came my way that really challenged my self esteem and self worth. I was frustrated, angry, and hurt. It was then that I spent a few years trying to figure out what I really believed about God. I was miserable and unsatisfied. I needed a hope and a purpose for life. Knowing that I was made for something more, I decided to chase after Jesus Christ wholeheartedly.
John 10:10 says “My purpose is to give life in all its fullness.” Fulfillment came when I stopped calling the shots and allowed Christ to take control. He announced plans for me much larger than this life. He offered me unconditional love, forgiveness, and freedom from broken relationships. I no longer have to live in “if only” times. I don’t have to worry about measuring up to a certain set of standards. I have a purpose to live for – loving God and loving people, and a hope that I want everyone to have.
